Skipton Castle Badges through the years...

Since 1974 Skipton Castle has given a badge to every visitor under the age of 18. Our very young visitors have to show that they can stand up unaided to qualify for a badge. Over one million badges have been given away. The badges change every year and occasionally more than one version of a design occurs in a year. The badges are illustrated below with the year of issue.

The first badge 1974 was printed in three colours on white paper measured 32mm and had a wire brooch back. In 1980 the badge was issued with two different background colours: green and blue.

In 1983 the size of the badge was increased to 38mm and a safety pin fitted. This was to reduce the risk of badges being swallowed by infants and to make them safer to handle. In 1984 the same central design was used with four different coloured rims: red, yellow, blue and green.

In 1997 the first design (97a) was not liked and replaced by (97b) after a few weeks. The year 1998 saw the introduction of process colour printing allowing photographs to be reproduced.
