 | Of noble birth Henry, known as the Shepherd Lord, is the least known of the Clifford family - his life is shrouded in mystery and probably quite considerable romanticism. Allegedly raised as a shepherd amongst the Cumbrian fells throughout his youth to hide him from his family`s Yorkist enemies it is believed he was illiterate but immersed himself in the study of astrology at his favourite residence, Barden Tower. In 1513 he led a troop from Craven to fight against the Scots at Flodden: probably one of the rare times he left his rural idyll. |
