 | Thought to be a motte and bailey earth and timber structure built circa 1090, by the Norman - Lord Robert de Romilly, his lands stretched from the Wharfe to the upper reaches of the Aire taking in land covering many square miles. Over the centuries the castle was strengthened and added to and as it stands on a 40 metre cliff, it commands secure views to the north and south facing down over the Aire valley and surrounding countryside. Following Lady Anne Clifford`s fight to have the castle restored following the Civil War, it stands today intact - just as she would have left it. |
