General Painting with Hannah Chesterman Click for Details
This long running and popular course is aimed at students of all levels of ability from complete beginners to those with a higher level of skills.  Hannah will guide students through projects of their choice or will suggest material to work from using secondary source material and still life.  Learn how to apply a variety of mediums from watercolour through to charcoal, pastels, pen and ink and acrylics, in a lively and friendly atmosphere.

Our own 'singular woman': born in Skipton Castle on 30 January 1590, Lady Anne fought for her inheritance from the age of 15 until she was in her late fifties.  By the time she came to Skipton after the Civil War, she was almost 60 and spent her remaining 26 years rebuilding and restoring her Yorkshire and Cumbrian castles and estates to their former glory.

Skipton Buildings & Local History with Susan Wrathmell Click for Details
Susan is Senior Listed Buildings Officer for the Yorkshire Dales National Park and has also worked on an English Heritage Dunded research project on Skipton.  An introductory lecture at the castle will be followed by a walk around the town looking at historic buildings you may have passed many times without a second glance.  Susan witll bring Skipton's past to life with insights into a fascinating bygone world of agriculture and industry that has made the town the tourist destination it is today.  The fee includes morning coffee and biscuits.

Poetry Workshop & the Art of the Poetry Pamphlet with Hazel Buchan Cameron Click for Details

Hazel has published four pamphlet collections of poetry and has written numerous articles relating to pamphlet publishing.

Nearly one hundred years ago Leonard Woolfe wrote, 'the pamphlet is potentially an extraordinarily good literary form from both the artistic and the social or political point of view'.  Over the last twn years, poetry pamphlets have become the preferred choice of many poets.  Individuals, small presses and the larger publishing houses now produce them.  This workshop will feature a morning looking at poetry pamphlets and their production and an afternoon poetry workshop.

Portraiture with Norman Long Click for Details

Norman is one of the foremost figurative artists in the UK, and his oil portraits have featured in Royal Society of Portrait Painters exhibitions.

The workshops will introduce you to reliable procedures for accurately and expressively painting portraits from life.  Demonstrations and individual guidance will help you to observe proportions, light and shade and colour.  Suitable for students of all abilities.  The tutor will work in oils, but students are free to work in their medium of choice.

Surfaces to Dye For with Ruth Issett Click for Details

Ruth is a renowned textile artist and designer whose colourful and dynamic work in fabric and paper is an inspiration to art and design students.  She has published four books and has tutored courses throughout the UK, Europe, Australia and the USA.

 

This fascinating 3 day course starts with uncoloured fabric, thread, some print and stitch.  Add the magic ingredient of dye to create colourful and glorious stitched textiles.  An experimental course using natural fabrics and threads: cotton, linen, silk, rayon/viscose, jute and hemp for those interested in extending their experience of stitch, print and dye !  Use simple print techniques to give pattern and resists to fabrics, these can then be further embellished with stitch and dye.  Add hand and machine stitch to white and natural fabrics to create textural surgaces then add colour to achieve stunning results and learn how dyes affect different types of fabric.

Blocks and Patterns with Ann Holden Click for Details
Make print blocks using a simple technique, and use to explore pattern repeats.  The inspiration if from Native American weaving patterns and the results will be unique for each participant.  You will then be show how to use a combination of paint, bleach, foil and stitch to create panels which can be used to make bads, book covers etc. or simple to hang on the wall.  They can be stitched by hand or machine and embellished with beads, sequins or tassels.  Make a special gift for someone or a treat for yourself.

Silk Shading and Goldwork with Ann Holden Click for Details

Learn the art of silk shading on flower petals combined with metal thread techniques.  The background is created very simply by painting grasses onto paper with transfer paints,  then ironed onto the fabric.  We will then identify different types of metal thread and the correct way to use them.  We will also stitch beautifully shaded petals in silk thread.  A choice of two designs will be available
